About this culture

First, the name: ours are not cultured in vinegar and do not ship in a bottle. We culture our vinegar eels on oats, in exactly the same tubs and the same way as our microworms — so if you can keep microworms, you can keep these, and one shelf runs both. What makes them worth their own tub is size: they are smaller and thinner than microworms, small enough for tiny fry in their first days, and they keep swimming in the fry tank for hours instead of sinking and dying, so surface- and mid-water fry get a real chance to hunt them. Perfect insurance food to keep running next to every spawning tank.

Best for

  • Tiny fry (betta, tetra, rainbowfish)
  • Surface & mid-water feeding fry
  • Nano fish & shrimp larvae
  • Breeders who want a backup culture on the same oats system

How to culture it

  1. Set up exactly like microworms: plain oats or instant porridge mixed with water to a thick paste, ±1 cm deep in a shallow tub with a ventilated lid.
  2. Spread the starter over the surface and keep at room temperature, out of direct sun.
  3. Worms are climbing the tub walls and ready to harvest in about a week.
  4. Start a fresh tub every 2–3 weeks before the old one sours, and keep two tubs running — staggered tubs mean you never face free-swimming fry with nothing small enough to feed them. Label tubs clearly: vinegar eel, microworm and banana worm tubs look identical.

How to feed it

Wipe worms off the tub wall with a wet finger, cotton bud or brush, swirl in a little tank water and pipette over the fry — no vinegar to rinse off, because there is none.

They stay alive and swimming in freshwater for hours — ideal for fry that have not learned to forage on the bottom.
