Fry feeding guide

Best live food for betta fry

Betta fry are tiny — far smaller than guppy fry — and most first-week losses are fry starving next to food that is too big or does not move. The winning sequence is the smallest swimming food first, then a step up every few days as mouths grow.

The feeding plan

StageFeed thisWhy it works
Days 1–4 (free-swimming)Vinegar eelsSmallest of the cultures and they swim in the water column for hours, so weak hunters keep finding food between feeds
Days 3–10Banana worms, then microwormsSlightly bigger and very productive; microworms crawl and sink slowly, giving fry repeated chances near surfaces and the bottom
Week 2 onwardsNewborn daphnia / moina from your cultureThe step up to baby brine-shrimp-sized food; sift or pick the smallest daphnia from the culture
Juveniles (4+ weeks)Grindal worms (young, small ones) + daphniaMeatier food for fast growth once mouths are big enough

Practical tips

  • Start cultures before you spawn: worm and eel tubs (all on oats) need most of a week to be climbing the walls.
  • Feed tiny amounts 3–5 times a day and watch for round bellies — that, not the clock, tells you they are eating.
  • Run vinegar eels and microworms together: eels cover the water column, microworms cover surfaces and the bottom.
Watch out: Do not pour worm culture medium into the fry tank, and siphon uneaten microworms — they die in water within a day and foul tiny fry tanks fast. Vinegar eels are the forgiving food; microworms need housekeeping.

Common questions

What is the very first food for betta fry?

Vinegar eels (or infusoria) for the first days — they are the smallest cultured food and stay swimming for hours. Move to banana worms and microworms from about day 3–4 as fry strengthen.

Microworms or vinegar eels for betta fry?

Both, ideally. Vinegar eels for the first days and as round-the-clock background food; microworms as the productive staple meal from day 3–4. The Fry Starter Kit contains both, plus banana worms and daphnia (moina) for grow-out.

How often should betta fry be fed?

Small feeds 3–5 times daily for the first weeks. Vinegar eels help if you cannot feed that often, because they stay alive and available in the water between feeds.
