Species feeding guide
African dwarf frogs are not really aquarium “fish food” customers at all — they are nearly blind, fully aquatic frogs that find food by smell, slowly, on the floor of the tank. In a community tank they are outcompeted by everything with fins. What transforms ADF keeping is worm food that stays alive on the substrate where a frog can blunder into it: blackworms and grindal worms, delivered to the frog.

| Stage | Feed this | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Staple worm feed (2–3× a week) | Live blackworms | The ADF classic — worms stay alive and waving in the gravel for hours, giving a slow, smell-hunting frog time to find dinner; fed from tongs or a dish, every worm is accounted for |
| In-stock rotation | Grindal worms, rinsed | Cultured clean in a box and the right size for a frog mouthful; sink straight to the floor where frogs feed |
| Light feeds & variety | Daphnia (moina) | Mostly a fish food, but frogs snap up moina they encounter at close range — good for froglets and small frogs |
| Froglets & small frogs | Young grindal worms and small daphnia, target-fed | Tiny frogs need tiny food placed precisely in front of them — portion size matters more than food size at this age |
Small meaty foods found by smell on the substrate: live blackworms are the staple of choice, with grindal worms as the cultured rotation and daphnia taken at close range. Most ADFs ignore floating dry food entirely.
Usually competition and eyesight, not appetite: the frog never found the food before the fish did. Target-feed worms with tongs or a pipette in the same spot each time and the frog will learn the routine within days.
They are widely considered the best ADF food — alive and moving on the tank floor for hours, which matches how a nearly blind frog hunts. Rinse them first and feed portions the frog finishes.
