Species feeding guide
Every koi breeder knows the moment a spawn is won or lost: the first two weeks, when fry the size of eyelashes need water full of food their own size. In Japan that food is traditionally daphnia bloomed in a green pond corner. Our starter (sold as daphnia; the animal is moina, its smaller warm-water cousin) is how you seed that bloom at home — a R50 culture that becomes a pond’s worth of fry food.

| Stage | Feed this | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Fry, days 3–10 (tank or pond) | Newborn daphnia / moina from your culture | Fry graduate from yolk sac to hunting tiny crustaceans; moina newborns are the right size and a mixed-age culture always has some that fit |
| Fry, weeks 2–6 | Adult moina / daphnia, fed heavily | This is the explosive growth phase — fry with live daphnia available all day outgrow fry on powdered food and show it in body shape later |
| Juveniles | Daphnia as the growth supplement | Keep the culture harvesting into the grow-on pond or tank; live food days alongside a quality pellet build frame and appetite |
| Adults | Occasional daphnia feeds | Not a staple at adult koi prices-per-kilo — but a culture tub’s surplus is a greedily taken treat that costs you green water and time, not money |
For the first day or two they absorb the yolk sac; then they need tiny live food — newborn daphnia (moina) from a mixed-age culture is the classic first hunting food, graduating to adult moina within the first weeks.
Yes — that is the point of a starter culture. Seeded into a tub, barrel or netted pond corner with green water, 500 ml worth of moina becomes a self-renewing bloom you harvest daily through the fry season. You are buying the seed stock, not the season’s food by the litre.
A close cousin, and for fry purposes often better: moina is smaller (adults ±1–1.5 mm) and breeds far faster in warm South African water than true Daphnia, so the bloom keeps up with a pond of hungry fry.
