Live food for scarlet badis

Scarlet badis are 2 cm predators in a nano fish body — and the internet’s most-asked badis question is some version of “why won’t it eat?” The usual answer is that the tank offers flakes to a fish that evolved to pick tiny living worms and crustaceans out of leaf litter, one at a time. Dry food is not refused out of stubbornness; most badis genuinely do not register it as food.

The feeding plan

StageFeed thisWhy it works
Daily stapleMicroworms and the smallest daphnia (moina)Both are small enough for a badis mouth and move like prey; moina adds a hunting feed, microworms a guaranteed eaten one
Conditioning & colourYoung grindal worms, a few at a timeThe classic badis food — rich enough to bring males into full scarlet breeding colour; pick the smallest worms from the plate
Shy or new fishA light scattering of microworms near the fish’s territoryBadis are ambush feeders that will not cross a tank to compete; food delivered to their corner gets eaten, food at the surface often does not
Juveniles & femalesBanana worms and newborn moinaThe smallest end of the menu for growing fish and for females, which stay smaller and shyer than males

Practical tips

  • Feed where the fish lives: pipe food down to its plants or leaf litter with a pipette rather than broadcasting it across the tank.
  • Keep badis with peaceful tankmates only — a fast tetra school will clear live food before a badis has stalked it.
  • A culture shelf beats a freezer here: small daily live feeds come from tubs that cost cents to run, and the fish never has to “learn” a new food.
Watch out: Grindal worms are rich and badis are prone to obesity in small tanks. Feed worms in small portions a few times a week and let the leaner microworms and moina carry the daily feeding.

Common questions

Why is my scarlet badis not eating flakes?

Because to a badis, flakes largely are not food — they hunt small, moving prey. Offer microworms or small live daphnia (moina) delivered near the fish; most “non-eating” badis feed within minutes of seeing live food move.

What is the best live food for scarlet badis?

A rotation: microworms and small daphnia (moina) daily, young grindal worms a few times a week for condition and colour. Variety also guards against any single culture crashing.

Can scarlet badis eat daphnia?

Yes — provided it is small. Our daphnia is moina (adults ±1–1.5 mm, newborns smaller), which suits them far better than big Daphnia magna. Net the smallest from the culture for small fish.
